Mounts in Unfamiliar Territory

Not all linescore zeroes are equal, and three goose eggs next to Ephrata’s name screamed volumes about the Mounts’ 2-1 loss to Cumberland Valley on Saturday.

The Mounts loaded the bases with no outs in the second inning. They loaded them again with one out in the third, and strung together three straight hits with one out in the fourth.

Total run output: zero.

“For the most part I loved the offense,’’ Ephrata coach Adrian Shelley said, “until the bags got stuffed and there was no place for anybody to go. Now it’s somebody’s job to put a ball in play or spray one, or lift a fly ball.

Pioneers Snap Back

The Lampeter-Strasburg boys lacrosse team entered its game Friday two days removed from an upset loss to Conestoga Valley. The Pioneers were without their starting faceoff because of COVID-19 contact tracing — compounding challenges for a roster lacking in depth.

And they were on the road at unbeaten Ephrata, facing a Mountaineers team with three all-stars back from the 2019 squad that won the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Two crown.

But among the differences, Chase Wilson and younger brother Lance have played tennis all their life, while senior Adam Zimmerman and brother Caleb are relatively new to the sport.

A little more than 17 years have passed since the death of Philip Cardin, who died by suicide Nov. 7, 2003. He was just 15 years old and a Cocalico High School sophomore.

In the months after his death, a group Cocalico High School students created a suicide prevention awareness group, coining it Aevidum, which means, “I got your back.”

Aevidum has since become a nonprofit organization, with student groups at more than 500 schools across Pennsylvania and beyond.

Ephrata Hires New Lax Coach

Ephrata has found its new head coach for their boys lacrosse programs.

On Monday, the Ephrata board approved Manheim Township alum and former Wyomissing assistant Andrew Doupe as the Mountaineers’ new varsity coach.

Doupe, 28, is a 2010 Manheim Township graduate who played club lacrosse at Susquehanna University. He works fulltime as an accountant for SlateHouse Group Property Management. He was a Wyomissing assistant coach in 2016 and 2017, and spent the last year as the coach of the Class of 2024 team for the iM3 Lacrosse club program.
