Ephrata Girls Start Strong

Ephrata’s Jennie Young picked up speed as she hit the turn of the 200-meter dash Monday at Eagle Stadium in Denver. The clouds that brought morning showers had broken, and a late-afternoon sun sent a mid-season warmth to the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Two track and field opener between the Mountaineers and host Cocalico.

“You kind of expect the beginning to be a little cold,” Young said, “but there wasn’t much wind, so it felt good to come down that stretch.”

Young shot through the second half of the 200, finishing at 25.6 seconds to collect her second individual victory of the day. Ephrata’s Kyra Horst (28.5) and Olamide Fatusin took second and third place in the 200 to help Mounts along their way to a 113-37 team victory over their backyard rivals.

Mounts 2nd at States!

It’s now two in a row for the Comets.

Penn Manor defeated Ephrata, 2-0, in the Baker Game finals of the state tournament on Saturday afternoon at 222 Dutch Lanes in Ephrata to defend its crown.

Pioneers Rally for Slim Win

Mired in foul trouble, Lampeter-Strasburg junior guard Jordan Swegar sat the bench for most of Monday’s District Three Class 5A boys basketball firstround playoff game against visiting Ephrata.

Didn’t matter. He made up for it by re-entering the game in the fourth quarter and coming up with the gamedeciding plays.

After host L-S came back from down 11 points in the second half only to fall behind by three, a Swegar free throw followed by a layup tied the game with 1:50 left.

Later, a Swegar offensive board —and the smarts to call a timeout as he was falling out of bounds — gave his team a shot down two with 39.6 left. Finally, on the ensuing inbounds play, Swegar’s assist to teammate Ben Sandberg for the game-tying layup and ensuing go-ahead free-throw with 36.8 left was the gamewinner, as No. 7 L-S escaped with a 38-37 victory over No. 10 Ephrata.

Cedars Rally Past Mounts

LEBANON — At least Charlie Fisher, Ephrata’s young boys basketball coach, knows now that his young, resurgent team isn’t afraid.

The fearless Mounts played what had to have been their best game in years Monday. It wasn’t enough, however, because Camryn Shaak wouldn’t let Lebanon lose.

Shaak, a senior guard, scored 19 second-half points to help the Cedars rally to a 52-50 win in a dramatic quarterfinal game of the Lancaster-Lebanon League playoffs.
