Streaks start fast, blast Ephrata

The Manheim Township Blue Streaks waited nine long months to take the
field, and once they did, they did exactly as head coach Michael Melnyk
wanted and played "one game at a time" as they blasted Ephrata 56-7
Friday night at Ephrata's War Memorial Stadium."We have said all spring long, 'one at a time.' " said Melnyk. "One play, one down, one quarter, one game, and it seems as though they are listening."
The Streaks scored early and often as they notched 14 points in the first quarter, and 28 more in the second quarter.
Josh Tutt took the opening kickoff at his 9 and returned it to the Ephrata 47. Five plays later Jo Jo Baciotti finished the drive with a 13-yard blast to put Township up 7-0.
On the Streaks' next possession it took seven plays before Matt Minnick scored from seven yards out.
Baciotti led all runners with 69 yards on 8 carries. Minnick chipped in with 65 yards on six carries.
In the second quarter, junior standout quarterback Pat Bostick hooked up with Derek Donmoyer for a six-yard TD pass and Padraic McKendry added a six-yard touchdown run.
The Township defense got into the act later in the quarter with a 30-yard interception from Chris Hartl, and then with just 51 seconds left in the half, Jay Ridinger caught a nine-yard pass from Bostick (12-for-15 for 167 yards, no interceptions, three TDs).
For the Mounts, Seth Zimmerman tossed 15 passes, completing six for 71 yards, one touchdown and one costly interception.
Ephrata running back Mike Burkholder rushed for 35 yards on seven carries.
"Coach (Melnyk) had been telling us all along to just play one at a time," said Bostick.
"When we take the field we feel like we match up with everyone. We're very confident," added Bostick.
Ephrata's lone score came with just two seconds left in the third quarter when Zimmerman connected with Kyle Sensenig on a 41-yard pass play.
On the ensuing kickoff, as time ran out, Kyle Bair returned the kick 97 yards for the Township score.
"Our game plan was to stop the rush and then hopefully be able to stop their short pass," said Ephrata coach Ken Grove. "Obviously we weren't too successful."
