Petters kicks Ephrata past Lebanon

ImageSenior running back Ryan Crowther (17 carries for 55 yards) had a pair of short touchdown runs, and senior Eric Petters drilled the game-winning field goal in the fourth quarter Friday night as Ephrata edged host Lebanon 15-13 in the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 2 openers for both teams.

Ephrata improved to 1-0 in the section and 1-1 overall. Lebanon, which knocked off cross-town rival Cedar Crest in its opener, slipped to 0-1 in the section and 1-1 overall.

Crowther's 1-yard TD dive sliced Lebanon's lead to 7-6 at the break. And his 3-yard TD run gave Ephrata a 12-7 lead with 3:46 left in the third quarter. Ephrata's lead wouldn't last long as a big kickoff return found the Cedars deep in Mountaineer territory.

And with 1:53 left in the third, Lebanon pushed ahead to take a 13-12 lead when junior Jared Marderness slammed in from the 2.

But Petters won it for Ephrata with a 33-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. With 2:01 left to play all the Mounts defense had to do was shutdown Lebanon's offense one more time.

The Cedars did however march down the field, getting as close as the Mountaineer 5 yard line, but a holding call on the Cedars elimated the go-ahead touchdown, and their last play resulted in a sack.

The Mounts now look to make it two in a row as they host the Cocalico Eagles next week.
