Ephrata track team sweeps Solanco

The Ephrata track & Field teams both came home from Solanco on Monday with season opening victories. While the Lady Mounts dominated the girls from Quarryville, 106-44, the Mount boys had to scrap until the end, winning 80-69.Finding themselves in a 41-23 hole, the boys went on a 39-3 run over a span of five events and garnered enough points in the other remaining events to claim victory.
Jordan Yarbrough led all Mount scorers with a four-win afternoon, one that saw a stiff, cold wind blowing for the duration of the meet. Yarbrough claimed the 100 (10.9), 200 (22.8), 400 (56.5) and long jump (20-6) to help propel the Mounts. Greg Forstater won the high jump (5-6) and 300 hurdles (45.1), while Mickey Molchany, Richard Njenga and Zach Stiles each claimed the top spot in the 3200m run, triple jump and pole vault, respectively to round out the wins for the boys.
The 4x400 relay of Njenga, Andrew Kujawski, Jair Saenz and Elliot Pfautz won the boys' lone relay event and Matt Kujawski scored nine points on three, second place finishes in the 100, 200 and high jump that went a long way to help determine the outcome.
"The boys hung together and fought till the end," remarked head coach John Keller. "To their credit they did not quit, it was the start to the season that we were looking for."
For the Lady Mounts, it was a trio of double win performances that sparked the girls to vic tory. Katie Ream won the high jump and 100 hurdles, Gabby Gehr claimed the 200 and long jump and Janel Nolt found victory in the javelin and discus to lead the balanced attack.
Freshman Whitney Blouch won her first varsity race in the 100 dash and ran second leg on the victorious 4x100 relay. Kat Andriani out ran her opponent to win the 800 run and Steph Lyons set the pace in the 3200 run for a win. Patty Gates set a new PR with her win in the shot put and Emily Albright took the top spot in the triple jump to round out the wins for the Lady Mounts in the field and sand.
Joining Blouch on the inning 4x100 relay were Tai Davis, Megan Stauffer and Gehr, while Andriani anchored the girls 4x400 relay win along with Alyssa Bunting, Gehr and Nicole Martin.
Up next, Ephrata will face Section Two foe Conestoga Valley on Monday, March 30 at the Ephrata Middle School.
